Sensory Balance Board — OT-Recommended Vestibular & Proprioception Tool for Kids with ADHD, Autism & Sensory Processing

Color

Balance training that builds more than coordination — it strengthens the vestibular system, body awareness, and focus.

Balance boards are a powerful yet playful sensory tool for building the proprioceptive and vestibular foundation children need for self-regulation, focus, and motor coordination. Standing on an unstable surface activates the core, challenges the nervous system, and builds the body awareness (proprioception) that many children with sensory processing challenges lack.

Pediatric OTs use balance boards to address sensory integration, core strength, reflex integration, and attention — all at once.

Who it helps

  • Children with proprioceptive difficulties — poor body awareness, clumsy, bumps into things
  • Kids with vestibular dysfunction who struggle with balance and coordination
  • Children with ADHD who need movement while learning or doing homework
  • Children with retained primitive reflexes where core and balance work supports integration
  • Kids who need help with fine motor coordination and bilateral body coordination
  • Ages 4 and up

Sensory systems supported

  • Vestibular — challenges the balance and movement processing system
  • Proprioceptive — weight shifting activates joint and muscle receptors throughout the body
  • Interoceptive — improves the child's sense of where their body is in space

How to use it (OT-guided)

  • During homework or screen time: Place under a standing desk or TV — balance while learning to meet the body's need for movement without disruption.
  • As a sensory break activity: 5–10 minutes of balance board work provides organizing vestibular and proprioceptive input.
  • For reflex integration exercises: Your child's OT may incorporate balance board activities into a primitive reflex integration program.
  • For core strengthening: Add challenges like catching a ball or turning the head side to side while balancing.
