Cotton Weighted Sensory Blanket — OT-Recommended Calming Tool for Kids with Autism, ADHD & Sensory Processing
Deep pressure that calms the nervous system — so your child can finally rest, focus, and feel safe in their body.
Weighted blankets are one of the most widely used sensory regulation tools in pediatric occupational therapy. The gentle, evenly distributed weight delivers deep pressure touch — a type of proprioceptive input that signals the nervous system to slow down, reduce arousal, and shift into a calmer state. For children who struggle with sleep, anxiety, or sensory overload, this blanket can be a meaningful part of their daily regulation routine.
Who it helps
- Children with autism spectrum disorder who need deep pressure input for calming
- Kids with ADHD who are overstimulated and can't wind down
- Children with sensory processing disorder — especially sensory seekers
- Children with anxiety or sleep difficulties linked to a dysregulated nervous system
- Any child who seeks out being squeezed, wrapped tightly, or buried under pillows
Sensory systems supported
- Proprioceptive — deep pressure through the joints and muscles promotes nervous system regulation
- Tactile — soft cotton texture provides comfortable, non-threatening touch input
- Interoceptive — helps children become more aware of their body's calm signals
How to use it (OT-guided)
- At bedtime: Place over your child at lights-out to support nervous system downregulation and sleep onset.
- During sensory breaks: Let your child wrap up in the blanket during overwhelm or after school decompression time.
- During screen time or reading: Use as a calming lap pad alternative for children who seek pressure input while sitting.
- Before difficult transitions: A 5–10 minute wrap before a challenging event can help regulate the nervous system proactively.
OT weight guideline
Pediatric OTs generally recommend selecting a weighted blanket that is approximately 10% of the child's body weight. Always consult with your child's OT if you are unsure which weight is appropriate, especially for younger children.
Safety
Adult supervision recommended for children under 5 or for children with low muscle tone, respiratory concerns, or mobility limitations. Do not use if the child cannot remove the blanket independently.
