Some days what your child needs isn't a toy — it's forty extra inches of something soft and heavy to sink into.
In OT sessions, one of the most common patterns I see is a child who holds it together all day at school, then falls apart the moment they walk in the door — not because they're being difficult, but because their nervous system has been working hard to cope and finally has permission to let go.
That release often looks like a need for deep pressure: squeezing into couch cushions, piling blankets on top of themselves, or wanting to be held tightly. A 5 lb weighted animal large enough to lie across, lean into, or use as a floor cushion gives that same deep pressure input in a form a child can reach for on their own, any time their body asks for it.
A weighted plush is a stuffed animal filled with distributed weight — in this case 5 lbs across a 24.9-inch pig — that applies gentle, even deep pressure when a child holds, hugs, or lies against it. Deep pressure input activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is why occupational therapists use weighted tools to help children shift out of fight-or-flight and into a calmer, more regulated state. Because this pig is pillow-sized rather than toy-sized, it works as a calm-down corner cushion, a floor "landing spot," or a comfort object at bedtime.
It depends on your child's size and sensory needs. A common general guideline for weighted items is roughly 10% of a child's body weight, but this varies by child. If your child is under about 40–50 lbs or has any physical or respiratory considerations, check with your OT or pediatrician before regular use.
Our Weighted Comfort Bunny is 3.5 lbs and about 13.75 inches — a hug-sized companion for holding and carrying around. This pig is 5 lbs and 24.9 inches, sized more like a pillow than a toy, so it works well as a floor cushion, calm-down corner piece, or option for bigger kids who need more weight and surface area.
No. The pig arrives vacuum-compressed for shipping and will fluff back up to its full size and softness within a few minutes to a few hours after unpacking.
