Bedtime shouldn't be a nightly negotiation — sometimes what's missing is enough weight to help the body know it's safe to stop.
In OT sessions, one of the patterns I see most at bedtime is a child whose body simply won't downshift — wiggling, calling out, getting back up again and again, not because they're stalling, but because their nervous system hasn't gotten the input it needs to feel safe enough to rest.
Deep, even pressure across the body — like a weighted blanket, or a weighted animal large enough to lie against — can help cue that shift into a calmer state. A 5 lb panda sized to lie down next to your child, rather than sit on a shelf, gives that pressure exactly where and when your child needs it: right at the moment they're trying to settle.
A weighted plush like this 5 lb panda distributes weight across its body — concentrated in the abdomen and limbs — so a child gets consistent deep pressure input when they hold it, lie against it, or drape it over themselves. This kind of proprioceptive input is calming for many children because it engages the same deep-pressure pathways used in therapeutic weighted blankets and compression tools, helping the nervous system shift out of an alert state and toward rest.
Many families do use it overnight. Still, check with your OT or pediatrician first, especially for younger children, children with respiratory or physical considerations, or children who cannot reposition the plush independently.
Our Weighted Comfort Cat is a smaller, hug-sized companion. This panda is 5 lbs and about 24 inches, designed in a lying-down shape so it works as a bedtime companion or pillow-sized comfort piece rather than a toy to carry around.
Short plush breathes better than a thick weighted blanket, but if heat is a concern, try draping it over the legs or lower body instead of the full body, and talk with your OT about alternatives suited to your child.
Book a reflex integration or sensory processing consultation and we'll help you build a nighttime plan that actually works for your child's nervous system.
