About this tool
Deep pressure that can help a busy nervous system settle — so your child can rest, focus, and feel calmer in their body.
In OT sessions, this is one of the most common patterns I see: a child who can't wind down at bedtime — tossing, turning, asking for one more hug, one more minute, unable to let their body settle even after a full day. It's not resistance to sleep. It's often a nervous system that hasn't found enough pressure or input yet to feel safe enough to let go.
When a child's nervous system seems to be constantly in overdrive — struggling to transition, unable to wind down at bedtime — deep pressure touch is one of the tools an OT might reach for first. This cotton weighted blanket provides consistent, evenly distributed proprioceptive input that some kids find calming. For many families, that means a calmer bedtime routine and, over time, easier sleep — though results vary by child.
Who This Helps
- Children who seek or respond well to deep pressure input
- Kids who use pressure to help themselves settle
- Children who struggle to settle for homework, reading, or sleep
- Kids who find it hard to transition to bedtime
- Children with tactile sensitivity who respond well to predictable, even pressure
Sensory Systems Supported
- Proprioceptive System — deep joint and muscle pressure that can help some kids feel more organized
- Tactile System — soft cotton provides calming, predictable touch input
- Interoception — may help some children notice body boundaries and internal calm
Earl's OT Note
Weighted blankets are thought to work in part by engaging the body's proprioceptive system — the "hidden sense" that tells your brain where your body is in space. For a child who seems chronically wound up, a weighted blanket during homework, TV time, or sleep can sometimes reduce the background "noise" in their nervous system and make settling a bit easier. A commonly used starting point is roughly 10% of your child's body weight, though this varies and isn't a hard rule for every child.

How to Use
- Start with short sessions — 15–20 minutes during calm activities before trying it at bedtime.
- Let your child lead — many kids will naturally reach for the blanket when they want it.
- Try it during homework or reading — lap use during seated tasks works well for some kids.
- Bedtime routine — try introducing it 20–30 minutes before sleep as part of a consistent wind-down routine.
- Never restrict — a weighted blanket should never be used as a restraint. Always allow your child to remove it freely.

Safety Note
Weighted blankets are not appropriate for children under 2 years old or children who cannot independently remove the blanket. Always consult your child's occupational therapist or pediatrician before using a weighted blanket with children who have respiratory, circulatory, or orthopedic conditions. The blanket should never cover the face. For children under age 5, use only with direct supervision.
In practice, this is what we typically see once deep pressure becomes part of the wind-down routine for kids it fits: an easier path to falling asleep, and fewer trips back out of the room.
