About this tool

In OT sessions, this is one of the most common patterns I see: a child who asks for hugs constantly — tight ones, the kind where she squeezes back hard and doesn't want to let go, sometimes ten times before breakfast.

Parents often tell me they can't be there to deliver that pressure every time it's needed — school, car rides, the moments throughout the day when a hug isn't possible. That craving for a tight, steady hug is often a nervous system asking for deep pressure input, the same input a firm hug delivers, just needed more often than one parent can provide on demand.

A calm, steady hug your child can wear all day

For a nervous system that seeks out — or gets overwhelmed by — sensory input, deep pressure is one of the more reliably calming tools an OT might suggest trying. This compression vest delivers firm, even pressure across the torso, without the bulk of a weighted vest.

Who it helps

  • Kids who seek "crashing," tight hugs, or heavy blankets
  • Children who struggle to stay settled during school, homework, or car rides
  • Kids who find firm, even pressure calming
  • Size: Medium — check our sizing note below before ordering

Sensory systems supported

Proprioceptive and deep-touch pressure input.

How to use it

  • Introduce for short periods (20-30 minutes) before longer wear, and watch for your child's comfort cues
  • Try it during high-demand times: homework, car rides, transitions, or overstimulating environments
  • Combine with movement breaks (heavy work) for kids who seem to need both proprioceptive input types

Why an OT might suggest it

Deep pressure is thought to activate the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's "rest and digest" response — which may be part of why a firm hug or weighted blanket can help some kids shift from wound-up toward calmer. A compression vest offers a similar kind of input in a wearable, all-day form, though how well it works varies by child.

Safety note

Do not leave a child unattended for extended periods in any compression garment. Remove immediately if you notice skin irritation, difficulty breathing, or overheating. Not intended for sleep use unless directed by your therapist.

FAQ

How do I know if my child needs deep pressure or is overstimulated by it? Watch for calming (slower breathing, settling) vs. distress (pulling away, agitation) in the first few minutes — every child's sensory profile is different, and some kids simply won't like it, which is useful information too.

How long can my child wear it? Start with 20-30 minute sessions; some kids build up to longer wear with breaks over time. If your child has an OT, their individualized guidance should take priority over general advice like this.

Is this the same as a weighted vest? No — compression vests use snug, even pressure rather than added weight; we also carry weighted vests, which some kids respond to better.

How do I choose the right size? This should fit snugly but not restrict breathing or movement — check our size chart, and size up if between sizes.

In practice, this is what we typically see with kids it fits well: it's like sending the hug with them.
