Big movement isn't extra energy to burn off — for a lot of kids, it's the input their body needs before it can settle.
In OT sessions, this is one of the most common patterns I see: a child who does laps around the living room before dinner every single night — rolling across the floor, doing somersaults, moving until he's out of breath. Rather than trying to redirect or stop that drive for movement, the more effective approach is giving his body a dedicated, safe space to get it out.
That drive for big, whole-body movement is often proprioceptive-seeking behavior — "heavy work" through the muscles and joints that helps regulate the nervous system. Giving it a safe, cushioned place to happen is usually more effective than trying to shut it down.
A floor therapy mat is a cushioned, padded surface for sit-ups, stretching, rolling, animal walks, crawling patterns, and other floor-based exercises. In a pediatric OT context, it gives kids a safe, defined space to get the big proprioceptive and vestibular movement input their nervous system is asking for — whether that's part of a structured sensory circuit or just after-school energy that needs somewhere to go.
In practice, this is what we typically see once a family builds a short floor circuit into the after-school routine: the child transitions into homework or dinner with far less resistance.
Both are available in 180 x 60cm. The thicker 5cm option offers extra cushioning underfoot and underbody, which some families prefer for rolling and tumbling-style movement.
It comes in Black or Pink, in both the standard and oversize size options.
Both. While it works as a standard fitness mat, many parents and OTs use it specifically to give kids a safe, defined space for the proprioceptive "heavy work" movement — rolling, crawling, animal walks — that supports sensory regulation.
An OT consultation can help you build a simple, effective sensory movement routine at home.
