Others lose patience with tabletop work before it starts. In our OT sessions, a few minutes of building with magnetic cubes is one of the ways we warm up the eyes and hands together before handwriting, cutting or homework begins.

What is the Forest Magnetic Cube Set?

A 150-piece set of magnetic cubes that snap together on any face, so children can build flat designs or 3D structures without glue, pegs or frustration from pieces that will not stay put. Grass, bark and leaf cubes let children build outdoor scenes: a tree, a cabin, a path through the woods. With 150 pieces there is room for bigger builds and for building side by side with a sibling or parent.

Who it helps

Kids who rush or avoid handwriting and tabletop work and need an easier way in

Kids who find copying from a model hard, like copying shapes, letters or patterns

Kids who are building hand strength and finger control

Families looking for screen-free, sit-down play the whole family can join

Skills it practices

Fine motor control: pinching, placing and rotating small cubes

Visual motor integration: seeing a model and making the hands recreate it

Two-handed coordination: one hand steadies while the other builds

Planning and problem-solving: figuring out what goes where, and trying again when a tower tips

Sensory input

Tactile (smooth cube faces and edges), proprioceptive (the push-and-pull of the magnets gives the hands clear feedback about force), and visual (matching colors, faces and patterns).

What is visual motor integration?

Visual motor integration is how well the eyes and hands work together: seeing a shape, a letter or a pattern and then making the hands reproduce it. It sits underneath many school and daily tasks: copying from the board, forming letters, lining up numbers in math, drawing shapes, cutting on a line, and even matching buttons to buttonholes. When it is still developing, a child may know exactly what a letter should look like and still struggle to get it onto the page.

How we use it as a warm-up: 5–10 minutes before tabletop work

Copy my build. Build a 3–5 cube pattern. Check the cubes before each use and remove any cube that is cracked, chipped, or has a loose or exposed magnet. Swallowed magnets can cause serious internal injury: if you think a magnet may have been swallowed, seek emergency medical care right away, even if your child seems fine.
